Brew for Ommegang

Submitted by beerjobs on November 20, 2008 – 8:11 pmNo Comment

The Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY, is in the business of making bottle conditioned Belgian-style ales.  Among their portfolio are some amazingly delicious beers like Three Philosophers, a quadruple, their farmhouse saison Hennepin, Belgian Amber Rare Vos, the funky Brett sour beer Ommegeddon, and their eponymous Abbey Ale.

If you’ve never heard of any of the above beers, chances are, you are the wrong person for the job.  Ommegang is definitely a heavy-hitter in the US craft brew scene when it comes to Belgian-style beers.  Maybe that is because they are owned by Duvel Moortgat, one of Belgium’s most popular breweries.

What is Ommegang looking for in potential employees?

1) Common Sense
2) Good Work Ethics
3) Brewing experience or degree a plus but not required
4) Attention to detail
5) In-house Forklift Certified – training will be provided
6) Ability to continuously lift 40 lbs.
7) Good oral and written communication skills 8) Must be able to work flexible schedule when necessary – shift work required
9) Must work with integrity and work ethically
10) Must be team oriented

Interestingly enough, it says that brewing experience and a brewing degree are a plus, but not required.  Can you imagine a first-time brewer taking this job?  Sounds to me like trial by fire.

As with any brewing job, some of your daily duties would include:

CIP, malt milling, operating the brew house, wort transfers, yeast pitching, fermentation monitoring, filtration, general cleaning, beer tasting.

Yes, they even listed beer tasting.  How many people do you know who wish they had a beer tasting job?  I can name about 15.  If you’d like to have beer tasting as part of your job description, check the Ommegang Brewery Job listing on our Brewery Jobs page.
